If the transformer 'from australia' still works, in the sense of not being 
burnt out, and you simply want to find an equivalent US (110) transformer,
you could remove the transformer and run 6.3v AC (or other low ac voltage) 
into its output winding, then see what is apearing across its 230v
primary winding. This gives the ratio, so you can then see what 230 on the
primary was intended to give.
