Just got the 4014 schemos (thaks to Terry!).

Now what is that - two mirror image discrete OTAs forming a sort
of "Class C" 4-quadrant multiplier, and a predistortion circuit to
compensate for the deadband between the upper and lower quadrants.
Not exactly something I'd have expected. But after a second thought,
this would have a built in squelsh threshold for carrier suppression,
wouldn't it ? In that case, there we have the major difference compared
to a 1496 circuit ! And a possible reason for the famous "clean" sound !
