Midwest Analog Products has a "drum cookbook" which has a lot of neat
twin-T and simple filter/VCA circuits which work really well. Their
ADV-Bass is based around these circuits and reproduces a nice tight snare
or long decaying kick really well. Sometimes the sounds need a bit of
external compression or filtering, but you would probably do that to an
808/909 anyways.
3904's/3906's will work fine. Not sure about the 4558's.
