Thanks on JX-8P and Transformer rewinding

I'd like to thank everyone for all the replies I've gotten on my JX-8P
problem.  I've managed to figure out that the first problem is a bad
transformer - a part which Roland no longer has available and looks like
it's going to be hard to find.

Another potentially naiive question:

There are several places that I've run across that advertise that they
rewind transformers.  Is this possible with all kinds of transformers?
Is this usually a viable solution when a transformer goes bad?  Anyone
ever had it done?
