Very much matter of taste, Steve.
A vocoder (IMHO) needs 10 frequency bands to do an adequate job, the PAiA
and many cheap digital ones dont have this.
But, might work for you.
It isn't a cheap diy project, because for 10 bands you need 10 envelope
followers, 20 band pass filters, 10 VCAs.
Is it possible to hack a stereo EQ into one?
I dont advise it. You still need the VCA and env foll components.

if anyone IS doing it, use compander chips (NE572 etc)
these have 2 VCA and env foll in each chip.
