What I have seen, is attempts to replace a single by a dual or quad (or vice-
versa) fail due to a slight change in layout producing high frequency
oscillations.
And, with a dual or quad, it is slightly liklier to happen because of the common
power pins. With proper layout and design, there shouldn't be any problems.
Sometimes when this sort of thing is just too mysterious, I replace the
offending
chip with another of identical pinout but different characteristics...
sometimes
this can clarify the situation.
