My reply has probably been brought up before.  Analog Devices makes the SSM2018.  I think it's a dual VCA that can be EASILY used as a panner and crossfader (if I understand exactly what a X-fader does).  They sent me 2 samples free.  Just visit their web site.  Check out the data sheet.  I can't think of anything thats simpler for level of performance this chip gives.
