I use a wire brush to clean the copper before soldering, and never have any
problems. I can't imagine that using actual paste flux can be good for 
components, it is hellish corrosive.

We had a debate about water soluble flux here before.. I think the rule
is that you can get away without washing boards made with normal resin cored 
solder, but if you use the 'water soluble' flux solder, you MUST wash it.
