NOPE.. you DONT need any strange crystal.. mine works fine from a 4Mhz Xtal, 
no strange timing and it will handle upto 128Kbaud

so you dont need a software UART...
Like I say, its a superb chip..

A friend of mine is makeing a Midi-merger useing this chip.
