I think I am designing the same kind of "wave folder". It will fold negative
and positive many times, sort of "multi-triangle" function.
Each stage will fold over and below a threshold voltage (positive and
negative).
I think that it can be done with very few components : a pair of diodes
(fixed but
easy threshold) and a  amplifier/substractor (folding). The slope of the
foldings may
be controled by some gain pot somewhere I guess.
Hope I will have time to test my design this WeekEnd.
