Because they can come up with an improved model, and charge you 100 EURO
more for this "improvement".

The physical format is the same (AES/EBU is balanced...) but S/PDIF
does not use some data frame bits. So it may be that some machine refuses to work.

It is so tempting...
So you can force people to buy much more expensive AES/EBU connections or
interface boxes....
