looking for small, cheap knobs

Allied electronics has a lot of cheap little knobs. They're certainly
nothing special: most are black with metal caps, no rubbery sides,
certainly "utilitarian", but they get the job done. They have some very
small ones which fit the bill for you: .5" at the base.
They have an online ordering page (I forget the address) but you should
get their catalog anyway. It's huge and full of useful goodies. (altho on
the whole I'd rather go with Digikey or Mouser)
