Y-ellow Y'all.
I'm a little ill right now and I haven't responded to this but I thought
between embracing the bucket I'd like to just mention this.
Though I'm not about to run out to substantiate this I was talking to some
electricians some years ago and we were talking about putting 3phase on
here. At that time the power company would put 3 phase on if you could
demonstrate a need. I was looking at big, 3 phase airconditioning.
They said that what is commonly done here in the metro area is that three
phase runs down every street. Every 3rd house shares the same phase. Or
there abouts. If you want to put 3 Phase on it's there for the asking. I
should have done it when I thought about it. It'll probably cost money to
have it done now.
As for Akai gear. Yes that's exactly what happens. The filter, or snubber
as we have grown up calling them here, has no ground reference. Only to the
case. Which means it relys on their being a patch cord somewhere that
connects it to ground through some other piece of gear. Ironically I've
never known that in it self to cause a hum loop but We've all complained
about the boots we've got off the damn things.
I'm just amazed that things like this could pass into the country. It's
like there's one law for us and one law for them. (There probably is)
I have suffered with a few digital hum loops where the voltage developed
was of significance enough to cause the receiver to give up or get framing
errors. Yeah it happens and it could be the very devil to find. Fortunately
I've only got 4 or 5 I/Os to worry about but if you remember, I was talking
about pulse transformers some time back with a view to floating it all. But
imagine if they hadn't have thought about isolating MIDI!!!
For the record S/PDIF can be transformer isolated but is not balanced. But
from what I've seen there is not standard upon which sets down where the
pulse transformer should be. Some devices only have a transformer on the
input or output. Some have it on both and some have it on neither. My
saving grace so far is that the digital audio has often been more or less
paralleling the analogue audio so it hasn't been a big problem.
But on the whole, devices with digital I/Os have some big advantages. I
just wish the had an S/PDIF I/O option for the O1V. I'm guessing from
memory that I could shove S/PDIF up it's AES/EBU I/O option but I'd like to
get a definitive answer on that before I spend all that money. Not that
I've got the money to spend on it this year anyway so it's all a bit
academic. But logic tells me that there are only a few differences in the
subcodes and I think you can alter the way the O1V behaves in response to
sub-codes. I can also make the 3DAT send AES/EBU subcodes even though
it's talking physically across the S/PDIF I/Os. But I guess I'll get to
this at some point.
