How did you do your tests? Did you have to leave your hearing position
each time you changed anything or did you have a switch at hand? I'm
asking because the hearing position (and the sound source position too)
has a heavy influence on the sound. In normal situations our brain
compensates for that, but when doing recordings with a microphone slight
variations of mic or sound source position can do wonders. When reading
reviews on studio microphones ("mic X sounds
brighter/warmer/different/etc. than mic Y") I often wonder how the tests
were made. I experienced that with the same mic, same equipment, same
instrument, same player, same room two recordings made on two different
days sounded quite different. If I didn't know better I would have
believed two different mics had been used.

Also, did you disconnect the cable not in use on both sides (amp and
speaker)? How long were your cables?

Reminds me how I recently tried to find out how good the Mac AV input
is. I thought this was easy, just record, playback and compare to the
original. But it wasn't.
