WOOOO, just had a thought.....

I made a spectrum analyser out of a scope to XY modulation and a box..
The box had a narrow band filter being swept by a ramp (ramp linked to X and 
output of the filter fed to Y input...
It worked...

If I improved on this, ie made the filter pass band even narrower then this 
could be used to give a wide range.. if this was somehow fed into a 
multiband cross fade unit we could split thefrequencys out, crossfade and 
re-assmble ALL in the analog domain... Hmmm... time for some blank paper...

Told you I was insane...
