I saw this on the directors cut laser disc as well. The light sabre sound
came from two sources:
- Part of it was the sound of two old movie projector motors running at the
same time. This produces the chorusing hollow bass hum sound.
- The second part was found while messing around in the studio when the
sound designer (cant remember his name sorry) accidentaly passed a
microphone near a TV set. It produced a nice crackling 60Hz buzzing sound.

These two sounds were layered together, looped and played through a speaker.
The sound designer then waved a microphone infront of the speaker to the
time of the moves on camera to capture the resulting envelope and doppler
effects.

Has anyone out there experimented with stuff like this? Sounds like fun to
me. :)

PS. Another thing I remember was the Darth Vader sound which was produced
by combining a phased vocal by James Earl Jones with the sound of a Scuba
Regulator.
