No, that is a serious argument, not just a joke. Most people I know
are not ABLE to just sit and listen for 10 minutes. They need something
visual going on on stage.
I think it's more serious than that.
Many people go to a concert to see the process of music being created.
They care about the process; it's interesting, it's entertaining and
exciting to watch. So a performance consisting of tapes being played
is going to be a letdown for them in much the same way that a
lip-sync'd performance or a performance where the music comes from
sequencer is going to be letdown; you can't watch the process and
learn more about it.
Maybe this means that the best concert hall for music on tape is
your home stereo.
(Of course if they added a laser light show, modern dance or beat
poetry to the music, ticket sales would soar!)
