you should try to team up with somebody who is interested in electronics,
another student. The main trouble people who like electronics have, is
finding something worth building, now mass produced gear is so cheap
and full of features. Analog synth-diy is ieal.
Any electronic hobbyist can easily build a ton of stuff from net 
schematics, just tell them to stay away from CEM and SSM chips out of 
production.
I'm posting this reply publicly because i know there are plenty of 
people in the same boat, and I have seen how discouraging it can be to 
try to learn electronics and build your first synth at the same time.
Those shiteful error-ridden ckts in a Brit emusic mag probably 
finished off a whole generation of synth-diy prospects.
