i once saw an extremely easy to build oscillator that ran off of a 555 chip. 
it only had like 7 parts, and you could control the volume and pitch. it 
made a really strange waveform though, kind of like a saw. i dont have a 
copy of the schematics, but im sure you could find it on one of the many 
electronic project pages.
