I think there is nothing special about that famous SID chip.
Smartly designed as it is, it is a couple of digital oscilators
and a simple numerical controlled analogue filter. In today's
standards it might be almost recreated using few LSI digital
chips (or one PLD) and a bunch of discrete components plus an
OTA. I would say it is easy to make it better in terms of
signal quality.
What makes it amazing is hidden in the uP control possibilities.
In my humble opinion, instead of hunting for a C64 to rip off the
SID chip it's better to design your own minisynth card with an
onboard uC.
