Memorymoog cassette data load

I'm trying to load the standard factory patches into a memorymoog and
having a hard time at it.  I was successful pretty quickly with a previous
memorymoog but this one is giving me trouble.  I have the wav file on my
computer and play it through the headphones jack of my audio monitors.  I
either get "volume low" or "error".  I got a partial load one time.  I've
been varying the volume and tone with no success.  Is this pretty normal
or would the input comparator circuitry maybe be flakey?

Also, how do you see the firmware version via the front panel buttons? 
Maybe that's the problem?
