in the 'real world', you won't get 10psec from a 555 ;-)
my feeling is, for this application, 15ms is a safe length.
Some gear triggers on the rising edge, making pulse length somewhat
irrelevant. But, I have seen stuff that wanted the full 15ms.
Another problem is this: what amplitude for the pulse?
Again, this is gear dependant.
I've always found 10v enough.
