mixer wire

When i wanted to but wiring for a mixer, i first wanted to buy "speaker wire"
because it was the cheapest, and looked the coolest, but they told me that
speaker-wire wouldn't work, and that i'd have to buy another type of wire
that was shielded,
because otherwise i would hear a hum, this special cable was also 3 timer
more expensive, and looked pretty ugly.. what i need to know is if this is
true or if this is bullshit.
