newbie transistor question...

I recently ordered some parts for a PCB that I'm populating (
Blacet Dark Star Chaos).
I was expecting the part (2N-2222a) to come in a "black plastic
with flat side" format.
Instead I rec'd little metal cans with a tab on one side. 

My problem is that I don't know which way they need to be oriented
on the PCB.
(the silkscreen on the PCB shows a flat spot)

So my technical question is:
Does the tab orient toward or away from the flat side of the PCB
legend.

(I can guess, but the last time i did that a chip got fried - no
need to do things twice)
