I do surface mount work ALL DAY, and I was dubious at first, but now that I
see how cheap it can be as far as pcb costs (no drilling) and component
cost
(dont have to pay to have leads fused on) and how much can be put into a
small package, I am ALL FOR IT.. The reliability of smd simply rules, and
the heat dissipation of smd packages is far better if heat pads are used to
relieve some of the heat to the pcb itself..
I too, say, to everyone "get with SMD, or prepare to find it harder and
harder to come by components..

Hi Rob:

I use surface mount for some projects, and I have no problem with using it,
but I don't understand your comment "no drilling". How do you do vias
without drilling? How do you get connections between layers or between
sides? Just wondering.

Well, yes, there still is SOME drilling! ;) But, since pcbs are priced by
the number of holes in them as one of the factors, you only need to pay for
the vias, and not for lead holes..
Lead holes can bring the price up significantly..
