ODP: DIL package disappearing? (was: CA3046 replacement)

For me DIL (can I say DIP?) can die! They are only space wasters.
I use DILs only when there's no SOIC available ;-)
SMD boards look so cute, and are small.
As for soldering - SOIC is as easy solderable as DIL with little experience
and no special tip required (well, I made mine out of 2mm copper wire).
Even SSOPs (0.65mm pin spacing) are solderable in usual way, but
you can do it simpler with better results using special 'spoon'(?) tip.
Put loads of solder into the tip (it has a cavity) and just go through one
side of the IC. A lot of flux required btw :-)
This topic was covered few months ago AFAIR.
If there will be some demand, I might consider making soic2dil adaptors
and sell them for $0.89 apiece
what I'm affraid of, are those BGA packages, with 'balls' on whole bottom
surface. Now THIS will kill diying for sure.

PS. To see what I mean by space-wasting, look at my latest SMD board:

You know, I wouldn't be myself if I didn't try to show off from time to
time.
