I was thinking of makeing some "tubular bells" with clear perspex 
(illuminated from the top) with a XTAL earpeice as the pickup.

When you strike it two things happen;

1) the xtal generates a signal, amplify/fullwaverectify and bingo one 
trigger that is velocity sensative (harder you hit it, the bigger the CV), 
all you need is a S&H to sample the CV whe its above a certain level and 
hold it until the next time.
2) This is my daft extra, the perspex is lit by a bulb, that gets bright 
then fades as you you hit it... eat your heart out JMJ!!!
