OT new internet crackdown (WAS Re: Geocities/My web page)

Y-ellow Y'all.
	I know this is OT but several people here asked me basically the same stuff.

Firstly. Yes we did protest. Yes we did partition. The minister in charge
of communications, one Senator Richard Alston Said that the industry was in
favor of it. This despite over 100 submissions from industry to the
contrary. Despite the entire industry warning him against such a move. And
despite a report commissioned by his own department warning of the dire
consequences of just legislation.

In the same week that the legislation passed the upper house and IT
businesses started pulling out of Australia, Dicky Alston flew out to
Silicon valley on a trade mission to drum up IT business. The people in the
US IT industry laughed him out of the country. His stupidity rippled
through the US trade/industry journals including Wired. Dicky Alston then
said of the US Technology industry as he did about our own industry. He
Laughed and said. "Oww. These guys just don't know what they're talking
about."

Now Australia has the same kind of oppression that previously only
countries like China, Iran and Burma have. But we're still unique because
No-one laughs when you mention China. The world is having a good ol' belly
laugh at us right now. Especially after all the rhetoric about Australia
being the clever country. And you thought only your clocks were going to be
set back to 1900 in the year 2000. Our whole damn country is being set back
100 years.

For those who mentioned what words would be filtered and therefore banned.
The following is a list of words that were filtered by the government's
preferred filtering software. `iFILTER'. Written by a company called
On-line Services. The only company to actually place a positive submission
with the government's select comity on the matter. They said they thought
the legislation was a good idea because then they'd probably be able to
sell more internet filter software. The entire industry is now adamant that
if it has to buy filter software it won't be by `On-line Services.'

I have included it for your general amusement. What the filter is supposed
to do is find web pages with these words in it and then block access to
that page.

You'll note that yes `adult' is one of the words. A great many of the words
banned here are actually legally broadcastable on other Australian media.
Including during prime time. The word `bugger' is commonly used. It means
to take it up the ass and ows it's origins to the UK. It is so commonly
used that it puts in an appearance in not 1 but 2 television commercials
currently airing.
