Mark -- My favorite is what they call pad-per-hole. They are the most versatile.
To wire prototypes I use pre-stripped wire-wrap wire and cut down the stripped
part to about 1/8 inch. One has to be careful, as the insulation melts away
rapidly. You can also get that size wire (30 ga.) with better insulation.
Whatever wire you choose will have to be robust "under the iron", otherwise
you'll discover first hand the joy of wires melting together and shorting.
