Also, suffer through www.microchip.com website because they have a 
load of excellent programming software, code snippets and tips.  Lousy
web site though...

See if a local library has back issues of Circuit Cellar - there was 
a DIY PIC programmer that ran off your paralell port and was pretty 
cheap to build - they offered the board plus programmed chip for about 
$40 if I remember correctly.


I have spent a lot of time with the Intel 8051 series and the PICs are 
a load of fun - well thought out!
