Welllll....just build a 3 stage flipflop!
It's just the same as a two, it's called a 'walking ring'.
With large walking rngs, there is the problem of more than
one section being 'on'..
But, how to be sure it has only one 'on' at a time?
Really, the more I think about it, I'd use 3 555 one shots
in a circle, with a button to start them off (or some automatic
'power up' system). There isn't anything much more robust than these!

Perhaps a byproduct of this will be a really interesting envelope generator?
Speaking of which, has anyone combined an envelope gen with a highly
resonant LP filter around 0.1 Hz to give 'ripples' on the envelope?
