Just got back a fax from NTE. The NTE42 (npn) and NTE43 (pnp) are
dual transistors connected as differential amplifiers, ie the emmiters
are sharing a pin. According to the spec sheet maximum delta Vbe is
10mV. Not exactly supper matched by a long shot. Typical delta Vbe is
1mv. Beta is listed at minimum of 400. The price in the mouser catalog
is about $1.90 for the npn and $2.00 for the pnp. And these are
complementary transistors.
The problem with the CA3096 is that the PNP transistors in that part
are lateral. This means poor high frequency characterists at the best.
Have not looked into them too much further. I have used the CA3096 in
the past, don't really know how good the PNP's would work in exponential
converters and the like.
I have not been able to yet locate any information on the CA3084.
