It would be hard to eject the box from the mold if the sides were straight.
The taper is probably more for ease of manufacture than for esthetics...
http://www.sescom.com/enclosure/ - these people have some nice enclosures.
A bit pricey but major quality... Their audio circuits are of interest too.
Online catalog available via PDF files.

Subject: Aluminum box enclosures with perpendicular, not tapered sides?
Hi guys,
I recently purchased a Hammond diecast aluminum enclosure (part number
1590D, about 7.4"x4.7"x2") to mount a project in. While the construction
quality of the box is very nice, the sides of it are tapered instead of
perpendicular to the horizontal surfaces, which for me is extremely
frustrating. (The pictures and dimensions shown in the catalogs are very
misleading.) I was wondering if any of you have come across any high
quality alumimum box enclosures that have truly perpendicular sides? If
so, can you please provide me with any specific manufacturers/part
numbers? Also, do you know if these boxes are offered optionally with
a baked enamel finish?
Thanks very much for any help,
Brett D
