Yes, it is safe, as long as the pot isn't connected to more than 15 volts. But you won't get a linear response this way. I guess that isn't a problem in your case, but it explains why such a simple circuit is not used in real designs.

Hi All,
I'm building a filter based on the MS 20. I was wondering if it's safe to
use just a series resistor (15k) for the bias input (as in the data sheet)
and have this coming off the wiper of a 10k pot?? I want to try it like
this before I build the expo converter. I don't want to keep blowing up LM
13600's. I'm missing a few pages from the data sheet.
