The most flexible way is to use a comparator on the saw waveform to get a
pulse width modulation signal. The other input to the comparator goes to a
voltage source to set the pulse width. I think there's a schematic on the
web somewhere for this. It's very simple.
You could take the pulse wave straight off the 555 but it's probably not
square.
