Hi Paul:
This sounds like a set of 4 soft cover books I bought a few years ago from
MCM Electronics (800) 543-4330. The books are titled:
The Diode Manual
The FET Manual
The Transistor Manual
The Transistor Substitution Manual
The books are mostly printed in Japanese, but the numerical information,
along with the heading of eack column of device specs are written in
English, making them usable to someone familiar with semicondoctor data
sheets, but not able to read Japanese. The book set covers nearly every
discrete Japanese semiconductor I've come across. Highly recommended, and
affordable, I remember they cost about $10 - $15 each.
Most Japanese devices are also listed in the D.A.T.A. series of books, but
these are quite expensive, around $600 I think. I bought a D.A.T.A. set at
a ham fest for a few dollars a while back.
I also got free semiconductor catalogs from Toshiba, Sony, Shindengen, Rohm
and some of the other Japanese manufacturers by calling their U. S. sales
offices and asking for whatever they have.
If anyone on the diy list wants info on a Japanese part and can't find it,
e-mail me and I'll see if I have it.
