I'm in my last year studying for a degree in EE and acoustics. I'm
involved in running an electronics workshop driven by students, so I have
access to a few luxury items (big UV-lighting table, etching machine,
automatic drill).
With the current discussions on soldering SMD components, I'd like to
point out that as long as you have a good tip on your soldering station,
a set of good pliers, a magnifying glass and a steady hand, you can
probably work with everything except ball-grid arrays. But then, these are
only used in the REALLY big processors, DSPs and FPGAs, so...
Also, by using a good quality transparency (not ordinary
laser-transperancies, but slighly opaque/matte ones), a good laser printer
and good quality photo-PCBs, good two-sided PCBs with down to 8mil/8mil
spacing can be made with a resonable yield.
You can really do very much with rather modest equipment...
