I'm an applications engineer and project manager for a satellite radio
project here at Lucent. This is a lot more fun than the last project I did
here which was Wave drivers for PC audio. Prior to this I was in the Music
Industry for ten years after building my first analog synth ten years
before, eventually working at Ensoniq in their R&D department. I went to
Lucent and more mainstream communications work because I got tired of being
laid off every two years working on something to make the perfect piano
sound. Now I can be as "weird as I wanna be" with my weekend basement
experiments (see the web page for more info). I do feel fortunate having a
job that grew out of my hobby in music and electronics, and my "day job" and
weekend fun continue to reinforce and compliment each other. I would
encourage someone who wants to work on making musical instruments to go for
it, it was great fun for a while.
