It's not so complicated to need a microcontroller.
I have built all the 909 sound generator circuits myself, and have a put a
bit of info about the sample playback sounds on my extremely minimal web
site at http://www.octavo.demon.co.uk/colinf/home.htm including wav files of
the sounds generated from the original 909 rom data.

I will be adding more to this page soon, so I will scan in the 909 cymbal
schematics if I can't find them somewhere else.
Also to come will be very simple tune mods for the 909 bass drum and hihats.
