Well, I found a place called ARC-USA that will sell rubber buttons for
experimenters and modders! www.arc2.arcpv.com
For those applications where space is crucial, these buttons are a MUST!
They are also really neat in that you can use just about anything as a
button with these, because you merely need something to fit in the
button hole so that you can press down the conductive rubber. E-switch
has some really neat chrome plated button covers for cheap. To add to
the conductivity, you can also get nickel or gold contactors underneath
rather than the carbon.
One question though: I see on a lot of gear where the PCB trace is
coated with carbon where it contacts the rubber button. Does anyone know
if you can get some sort of mixture or conductive glue to glue the
carbon to the traces?
I *think* this is the very reason why MMT-8s button overlay goes bad. I
don't recall seeing carbon on the PCB contact pads.
I guess it will work ok with just the copper, but copper tends to
oxidize after a time. Maybe just using the old trick of glueing aluminum
foil on the bottom of the button will work.
