There was an issue of Electronic Musician back in the late
80's that featured such an article. The project is probably
simpler than you think because it didn't use a microcontroller
at all. You basically just need to reset and fire off a counter
that drives the address lines on the EPROM every time you
trigge the module. Of course you'll also need a D/A converter
connected to the data lines of the EPROM to reconstruct the
audio....
If I can find the issue I'll let you know. I could possibly scan
the schematic at work and email it to you....
