Digital DIY synths?

I can imagine that. That is why those ready made evaluation boards are so  
neat. They usually offer an audio-grade a/d and d/a, and some development  
software for use on a pc, so it is plug and go. Motorola, Texas Instruments  
and Analog Devices offer them, plus probably some other chip mfgrs too. And  
there's lots of demo code to get you started.

And in any case, you could play with digital synthesis on a simple PC with a  
sound card. Although that doesn't really appeal to me. B-)
CSound is a good example of the latter, although it goes much further than
