The original one, and my modification (two halves of a
SSM2020 in parallel).

Maybe so. Or they just ran out of Korg-35 modules. And while
redesigning it, they took care of the noise as well. The 
"deemphasis" trick would have worked on the Korg-35 filters
as well, and that alone brings 6dB improovement in the mid
and upper range.
