That was one of my first projects.. I basically ended up building a
giant discrete specialized computer, but man did I learn a LOT!

I would say that if you can do it with a PIC, go for it..much easier..
I had blisters on my fingers from pulling wires in and out of the
breadboard when I was troubleshooting my hardware based midi2cv!

Or, you *might* be able to use an FPGA, that is, if you really want to
do it without having to program in assembler or C.. They have schematic
capture on some FPGA software, very cool.

Oh, BTW, anyone ever do any FPGA work? I am SUPER interested in
learning, but it seems such a morass of useless info when I try to find
details about it..
