You're right.
Pin for pin replacements are only needed to replace the chips in commercial
synths.
For diy projects, knowing what's inside is all we need. Then build it from
standard 
components. No need to make our own modules, unless we are going to build
polyphonic stuff. Finding out what's inside the original is the difficult
part.

BTW, the information from the japanese web page about the traveler filter
in the PE-1000
was right: The filters are indeed built around dual Vactrols.
