   That would probably be a nice improvement, but no, both the driver
   mechanism and pickup are set up for transverse waves, not torsional or
   longitudinal waves.

Ian pointed out to me that I might be wrong on this.  I was confused
by some construction details of the tank I was looking at at the time,
and the magnet isn't oriented the way one would think.  

Yeah, it's probably torsional.  And the Accutronics application note
claims it's torsional, and they seem to know what they're talking
about.
