Sync via cross-coupling?

With the usual hard sync or soft sync, one oscillator is master and the
other is slave. But cross-coupled oscillators will also synchronize, as
some listers have probably inadvertently discovered.

My question is: has anybody thought about deliberately using symmetric
cross coupling for synchronization? What would be a good way to
implement it? Also what about cross coupling several oscillators this
way? Would the sounds have interesting characteristics due to dynamic
pulling?

Just thinking out loud after reading the interesting article in the
latest Scientific American on simulating synchronized fireflies.
