these common or garden resistors are guaranteed not to vary with temp 
by more than 100ppm, or whatever, up or down.

But, the tempco trsistors are GUARANTEED to increase in resistance by 3500
parts per million (or whatever they say) exactly, so that the well-defined
temperature dependence of some semiconductor can be exactly nulled out..
if you have the right circuit, and if you have the semiconductor and 
tempco resistor thermally connected.

You are right in that for a relatively tone deaf person like me, in a 
temperature controlled environment (unlike me) it doesnt matter a fig.
Especially if you nevr go above 1KHz.
