The BEST material for graphic overlays I ever used was the 3M "Dynamark"
system, which allowed positive or negative art on vinyl or anodized aluminum,
using a UV exposure lamp (or sunlight...). It is, of course (like all good
things, cv synths etc...) no longer available. The supposed new product to use
is called Quick-Mark, and seems to be similar bit I haven't tried it myself.
Find out at http://www.megaelect.demon.co.uk/quickmark.html or
www.vpcinc.com/dynamark.htm (US). Another source is Kepro (who make PC board
kits and supplies) http://kepro.com/etchkit.htm#np-404 for an anodized
aluminum nameplate kit.
The Dynamark material is still going strong after 15 years on my guitar
pedalboard. :-) Harry Bissell

Have you tried adhesive-backed printer paper? If you're using an inkjet,
they' don't use water-proof ink, so make sure you put contact paper over the
sticker. Also, you can use regular paper and good 3M spray glue to affix it.
Drill your holes first, then glue a slightly oversized layout to the
faceplate, trim off the excess, then cut the stock out of the holes and mount
your pots and jacks. It looks great
