Yeah, there are tong-like chip pullers. Extremely handy; you can pick 
one up at your local electronics parts store or online from Mouser 
or Digikey. Don't know about using them to pull pots, though. 

Have you looked into soldering-iron tips that are shaped like 
rectangles to heat all legs of an IC at once? I remember someone 
making something like this at one time... Neccessity and invention!
